We use these bags every now and again to have scavenger hunts for small things. We used them for this fall craft and we used them again here. I made a pocket out of a clear plastic sheet protector on the front of the bag big enough for an index card to fit in to remind the kids what we were looking for. We were focusing on our colors. This is an activity that can take a couple of weeks if you choose to do one color each day. After the child has found things that are the color of the day, take a photo of all of it and make a book out of it! They are so proud of the things they have found.

That's a great idea; thanks! I've starred it in my reader to try when my son is a little older. When do you think most kids learn the concept of colors? I keep trying to teach him (15 months), and I think he gets it, but then he seems not to understand at all. Who knows what is going inside that little head! thanks again.

We also used bags to learn colours. We "posted" (as it was a favourite activity to do) cards which featured a coloured picture into the matching coloured bag.
I also love the idea of the brown paper bag books, whereby you label each paper bag (either using words or pictures), such as leaves, flowers etc etc. Then we use string to secure the book (the paper bags) together. We then take our book outside and go on an adventure looking for all sorts of things. When we come inside we sort through and organise all of our finds and put them in the approriate bag. It's always fun to compare the different types, shapes, sizes and textures of the flowers, leaves, pebbles etc etc.
